Practical Quarantine Tank Setup

A hospital tank that protects your main display—not a second aquascape

Quarantine is boring on purpose

A hospital tank should be easy to drain, scrub, and restart. Fancy substrate and driftwood create hiding places for parasites and make breakdown harder.

One keeper described white spot appearing in a display tank two weeks after skipping quarantine on a single new neon tetra—the hospital tub they already owned would have paid for itself that afternoon.

If you skip quarantine, you gamble that every shop bag is clean—which is optimistic, not experienced.

Minimum quarantine kit

Twenty to forty litre tank or tub, seeded sponge filter, heater, thermometer, net, dedicated siphon, and cover to stop jumps. No gravel required—a bare bottom shows fish behaviour clearly. Run four weeks minimum for new tropical fish unless medicating sooner.

What matters most in hospital tanks

Seed filter media from the display tank so ammonia does not spike on day two. Keep equipment dedicated or sterilise between uses.

Location matters: bright busy rooms stress sick fish—dim and stable wins.

Running quarantine week by week

Week one: observe appetite and breathing. Week two: watch for white spot and fin damage. Weeks three to four: treat only if symptoms appear—avoid blind medicating.

A keeper told us they dosed a full-course treatment 'just in case' with no symptoms—the biofilter crashed and ammonia spiked in the bare tub. Observation first, medicine when you see a reason.

Daily tests early; reduce feeding to keep ammonia low in bare tanks.

Medication and honesty

Know your shop's return policy before buying fish. Quarantine does not fix poor source quality—it buys time to treat without infecting the display.

Dispose of carbon from hospital filters before treating if labels require it.

Break down when empty

Drain, dry, and store sponge separately. Label quarantine nets and siphons—cross-contamination defeats the point.

A tub in the garage beats no quarantine at all.

Recommended gear

  1. Best overall

    Marina Compact 50W Heater

    Marina

    Usually under £15

Short enough for hospital tubs—verify temperature in small volumes after water changes.

Best for: Quarantine and hospital tanks under 45 litres

    Avoid if: Primary display heating

  2. Budget pick

    Single Sponge Filter XY-2831

    Generic

    Usually under £8

Seed from main tank for instant bio—tips easily unless weighted.

Best for: Hospital filtration on air pump

    Avoid if: High-flow mechanical needs

  3. Also consider

    API Freshwater Master Test Kit

    API

    Usually £35–£45

Same kit serves display and hospital—quarantine without tests is guessing.

Best for: Any keeper running quarantine

    Avoid if: Skipping parameter checks
